Math 2551 A: Multivariable Calculus,  full summer term 2020

Syllabus

Prerequisites: MATH 1502 OR MATH 1512 OR MATH 1555 OR MATH 1504 ((MATH 1552 OR MATH 15X2 OR MATH 1X52) AND (MATH 1522 OR MATH 1553 OR MATH 1554 OR MATH 1564 OR MATH 1X53))

Overview: This course is mainly about the differentiation and integration of functions of multiple variables defined on various domains. The applications of such mathematical theory will also be discussed throughout the semester. Coming out of this course, you should have the required mathematics background for some upper level courses in applied mathematics, physics, engineering, etc.

Participation: Live lectures would be delivered on Bluejeans via Canvas. Students are expected to read the material before each lecture. It is suggested that you start to work on homework problems  right after they are assigned instead of waiting until close to the due date.

Textbook: Thomas, Calculus: Early Transcendentals 14th edition by Addison-Wesley (Pearson).

Material: In this semester, the topics we will cover include: Vectors and Geometry of Space, Vector Valued Functions, Vector Calculus, Tangents, Arc length, Motion in Space, Functions of several variables, Partial Derivatives, Gradients, Extreme Values, Lagrange Multipliers, Taylor's theorem in several variables, Double and triple integrals, Vector analysis -- line integrals, surface integrals, and the theorems of Green, Gauss, and Stokes. In the textbook, we shall cover roughly Chapter 12--16.

Only the simplest scientific calculators are allowed. In particular, graphic calculators are not allowed.

Grades: 1 final exam 40%, 2 midterm 25% each, homework assignments 10%. 

• Exams (final and midterms): The exams are open-book and open-notes (textbook and notes of this course only), but should be completed independently. For the paper part, please write your exam solutions clearly and circle the final answer of each problem in a box with no corrections inside. There will be no make-up for any missed exams, except under provable impossibility to attend the exam (contact Dr. Zeng). The second midterm and the final exam are on paper, while the first exam has both online and paper parts.
  
• The first midterm exam: The tentative date of the first midterm exams is Tue. 6/2. There will be no studio session on this day. The first midterm exam consists of 2 parts: the online part (18 points) and paper part (7 points). The online part will be given on MyLab via Canvas. The paper part will be a few problems which I will upload to Canvas on the exam day. The exam should be completed in the window 12--2:30pm EST of 150 minutes. Once you start, you will have 55 minutes allowed to finish the online problems. The file of the paper part problems will be available also at 12pm EST and your PDF scan of the paper part should be uploaded on Canvas by 2:30pm EST.
  
• The second midterm exam: The tentative date of the second midterm exams is Tue. 6/23. There will be no studio session on this day. It will be posted as an assignment on Canvas available during the time window 12--2pm. The solution sheets should be uploaded by 2pm.
  
• Final exam: The final will be given on Fri. 7/24 in the window 10am -- 2:30pm EST of 4 hours and 30 minutes. The PDF file of the exam problems will be available also at 10am EST and your PDF scan of the solutions should be uploaded on Canvas by 2:30pm EST.
  
• Homework: There will be online Homework through MyLab. Homework on MyLab via Canvas will be due at 11:59 pm EST on Tue. You may make 7 attempts on each homework problem. You can still work on the homework problems after the due time, but those problems completed after the due time would be penalized by 20% of points. The 8 best homework grades will be counted (so 1 lowest score will be dropped).
  

• Letter grades: In general your final grade will be assigned as a letter grade according to the following scale:
• A 90-100%
• B     80-89.99%
• C     70-79.99%
• D     60-69.99%
• F 0-59.99%

          When needed, a curve may be applied to adjust the letter grades upward.

• Piazza, accessed via Canvas (`Piazza' tab on the left, or try piazza.com/gatech/summer2020/math2551a), is a forum for discussions. The only restriction I like to impose on Piazza is: please do not discuss exam problems and solutions.
